Croup & Vandemar
“There are four simple ways for the observant to tell Mr. Croup and Mr. Vandemar apart: first, Mr. Vandemar is two and a half heads taller than Mr. Croup; second, Mr. Croup has eyes of a faded china blue, while Mr. Vandemar's eyes are brown; third, while Mr. Vandemar fashioned the rings he wears on his right hand out of the skulls of four ravens, Mr. Croup has no obvious jewelery; fourth, Mr. Croup likes words, while Mr. Vandemar is always hungry. Also, they look nothing at all alike.”
“And might I say how your telephonic confabulation brightens up and cheers our otherwise dreary and uneventful day?”
~Mr. Croup
“Mr. Vandemar showed them his teeth, demonstrating his sunny and delightful disposition. It was unquestionably the most horrible thing Richard had ever seen.”

Mr. Croup and Mr. Vandemar are notable assassins in the underground world of London Below. For centuries, the two of them have killed, as long as they were given the proper incentive. It is not mentioned whether they have gone made over time, or whether they were this way even before they became assassins.
At the beginning of the novel, they are chasing after Door, though the reason for their involvement with her is not mentioned until later, as Door herself discovers by whom they had been hired, and why they would do anything to see her die.
